Background of the Study
Political instability has increasingly become a critical factor affecting the efficacy of local government service delivery in several regions. In Esan Central, continuous political unrest has undermined administrative processes, weakened institutional capacity, and led to erratic policy implementation (Okafor, 2023). Historically, political turbulence has been linked with reduced accountability and mismanagement of resources, further impairing public services. Recent studies indicate that governance challenges in politically volatile environments result in delayed infrastructure projects, inadequate health and education services, and diminished community trust (Ibrahim, 2024). The interplay between political uncertainty and local administrative decisions exacerbates socioeconomic disparities, limiting the potential for developmental initiatives. Moreover, community participation in local governance has declined as political factions compete for power, leaving service delivery fragmented (Chukwu, 2025). The study emphasizes the importance of stable political environments as a prerequisite for sustainable local development. It argues that analyzing the causal relationship between political instability and the decline in public service delivery can offer insights into improving governance frameworks, resource allocation, and strategic planning within Esan Central. In doing so, the research highlights potential remedial measures and policy interventions to restore confidence in local government mechanisms.
Statement of the Problem
Esan Central Local Government Area faces severe challenges in delivering essential services due to prolonged political instability. This instability disrupts administrative continuity, leading to inconsistent policy enforcement and resource mismanagement. The resultant inefficiencies hinder infrastructure development, healthcare, and educational services, thereby diminishing public trust. Despite efforts by local stakeholders, the underlying political tensions continue to impede effective governance. These issues necessitate an empirical investigation into the precise impact of political turmoil on service delivery and the identification of actionable strategies to mitigate adverse effects, ensuring that local residents receive the quality services they deserve (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the extent of political instability’s impact on local government service delivery.
  2. To identify the key challenges and administrative inefficiencies arising from political turmoil.
  3. To propose policy interventions that can stabilize service delivery in Esan Central.

Research Questions:

  1. How does political instability affect public service delivery in Esan Central?
  2. What administrative challenges arise from political unrest?
  3. Which policy measures can mitigate the adverse effects of political instability on service delivery?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Political instability significantly reduces the efficiency of local government service delivery.
  2. Administrative challenges during periods of political unrest correlate with resource mismanagement.
  3. Policy interventions can positively influence the restoration of effective service delivery.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed analysis of how political instability undermines local government functions. By identifying challenges and proposing effective interventions, the research contributes to enhancing governance and service delivery. The findings may guide policymakers, stakeholders, and community leaders in establishing strategies for improved political and administrative stability (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the investigation of political instability’s effects on public service delivery in Esan Central Local Government Area, focusing solely on administrative, infrastructural, and community impacts. It does not extend to comparative analysis with other regions.
Definitions of Terms:

  • Political Instability: The state of unpredictable governance characterized by frequent changes in leadership and policy disruptions.
  • Service Delivery: The process by which public services are provided to meet community needs.
  • Local Government: Administrative units responsible for implementing policies and services at the grassroots level.
